Student Project for Amity Among Nations (SPAN) is Minnesota's oldest study abroad and one-of-a-kind independent research program. Locations vary each year. SPAN is a three-phase project:
- Spring semester—An outbound preparatory phase during which students select a research topic and begin arranging research connections and personal accommodations. They meet regularly with others in their group to discuss history, culture, language, and current events.
- Summer—Eight to ten weeks field research in SPAN host countries. A faculty adviser accompanies the group, but students are on their own much of the time.
- Fall semester—Upon return, students compile their research findings and write an extensive paper due during the following spring semester. Visit the SPAN web site.
Dates
Dates vary slightly. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad during
the summer completing field research.
Eligibility
The program is open to undergraduates and graduate students. It is recommended that participants have at least sophomore standing
by the time of departure.
Courses
& Credit
SPAN can be adapted to any major. Students earn eight upper-level
credits and often use this project as their senior paper (FSSP 5960,
5970).
Housing
Students are responsible for their housing and meals. Some assistance
is is provided by the faculty adviser.
Cost
Every SPAN participant is eligible for a SPAN scholarship. Because students arrange their own itineraries and living accommodations,
this study abroad program can be more economically priced than other
programs to similar destinations.
