Student Status at the University of Minnesota

Students participating on a study abroad program through the Learning Abroad Center are admitted to the University of Minnesota as a non-degree seeking student during their term(s) abroad. Students are required to activate a University of Minnesota student account for the purposes of receiving billing information and email communication from the Learning Abroad Center and University of Minnesota. Study abroad students are not eligible for state and federal financial aid through the University of Minnesota. Please see the Financials section for more information.

Study Abroad Credit


Study abroad students receive University of Minnesota resident credit for their program courses. Courses are recorded on an official University of Minnesota transcript unless a student’s home institution has requested an exception.

Proof of Enrollment


If a proof of enrollment statement is required from the University of Minnesota, request it via email to UMAbroad@umn.edu. Include your name, program, term, reason for needing enrollment statement, and person or office to which the statement should be sent.

Official Transcripts


The University of Minnesota provides one official transcript per student upon completion of a study abroad program. Students are required to submit a Transcript Request Form as part their program confirmation materials indicating the address to which their transcript should be sent at their home institution. Student do not receive a personal copy of their transcript.

Additional transcripts can be requested from the Office of the Registrar for a fee. Students will need to use the downloadable PDF form and submit it via mail or fax to the Office of the Registrar.

If you are requesting additional transcripts shortly after completion of your program, please verify that your courses and grades have been processed at the University of Minnesota before requesting the transcripts.

Timeframe


Courses and grades are typically processed and a transcript sent out within 4-8 weeks of the Learning Abroad Center receiving grades from the on-site program staff. It may take several weeks for on-site staff to process and submit grades to the Learning Abroad Center after completion of a program.

A transcript is not be released if a student has financial or other obligations to the University of Minnesota, Learning Abroad Center or on-site program staff.
