This program appeals to students who are interested in learning about Italian culture or want to take classes taught in English. Academic Structure

Program type: Summer Study in Rome is a study abroad center program. Students take classes at the ACCENT center with other study abroad students. Courses are taught in English by Italian faculty.

Level: 1000–3000 levels.

Term: Summer session.

Prerequisites: n.a.

Courseload: 6-8 credits

Coursework
This program is designed for students with little or no previous study of the Italian language, and students will choose two of the following courses:

  • Italian Media: Popes, Politicians, and Popular Culture (3 credits): This course begins with an overview of Italian Communications - from Julius Cesar, to Machiaveli, to Mussolini - and provides a background of the particular qualities and culture of Italian communications over the past 2000 years. The continual struggle for the power using communications technology, it's political and popular implications will be explored through two examples: The Vatican and Prime Minister and media mogul Silvio Berlusconi and their impact on popular culture and freedom of the 'press'. By exploring the conflicts between these two powerful communication systems, students will discuss how these two systems function and how are they perceived by foreign journalist and the world press.
  • Made in Italy...The Design and Marketing of an Ideal(3 credits): This course will provide students with a full understanding of Made in Italy as a brand and lifestyle. The course will revolve around lectures and site visits the contribute to the development of a student group marketing plan. Students in this course will visit the Castello Banfi Winery in Tuscany All study tours are subject to change. Approved for Arts and Humanities core and International Perspectives theme.

  • The History of Art & Design in Italy: From Pompeii to Present(3 credits): This course investigates design and technology born in Roman antiquity, specifically focusing on media that are still coveted in our times, and processes and engineering that are still used by today’s designers.From Pompeii to present, we will visit numerous sites to witness examples of design work, understand preservation techniques, and see why Roman antiquity continues to inspire today’s “Made in Italy” design throughout the world.
  • Italian Language 1001-1004 (5 credits):
    • 1001 or 1002 Beginning Italian (5 credits each)
      First-year Italian. Develop basic listening, speaking, reading, writing, and communicative competence skills. Some cultural readings are included. Italian 1001 is intended for participants with no prior Italian language instruction. For Italian 1002, Italian 1001 is a prerequisite; there is no prerequisite for Italian 1001.
    • 1003 or 1004 Intermediate Italian (5 credits each)
      Second-year Italian. Further improve conversation and comprehension proficiency as well as reading and writing skills. Includes grammar review. Italian 1002 or 1003 are prerequisites for Italian 1003 and Italian 1004.
