About the Program

London is one of the world's truly international cities and dominates British life as the center for government, law, business, finance, the arts, and popular culture. For its inhabitants and visitors, London offers unrivalled cultural and social opportunities.

London's long-standing ethnic diversity is an important factor in its popularity. The strong economy of the city draws many people including graduates from around the country and beyond. The presence of large numbers of long- and short-term visitors also adds to London's vibrancy. As with all big cities, there can be issues with traffic congestion, crowded public transport, long working hours, and high costs of living, but the benefits and excitement of living in London muffles all of these inconveniences.

Located in London's East End, Queen Mary is a place where students experience London life instead of London tourism. Made popular by the show entitled "East Enders," this part of town has historically been home to the changing immigrant groups that come to London. Off the beaten track but with easy access to the rest of the city, the East End allows students to become a part of a modern representation of the international community that now makes up the city. Also, this area is a less expensive part of London and many theaters, pubs, and bars cater to unviersity students.

Faculty & Staff
Faculty are well known for teaching excellence and student concern. Most are experts in their field and many are international. Past participants have enjoyed getting to know their professors well due to small class sizes and sometimes a more informal teaching environment.

The International Office will work with you prior to departure and during your stay. They organize an orientation for study abroad students upon arrival. You will receive information about campus, facilities, clubs, and the British educational system. This is also when students consult with faculty on courses and register.

Housing & Meals
Students live in single rooms with shared kitchen facilities in on-campus residence halls. There is the option of standard rooms (single rooms with a sink) or ensuite rooms (single rooms with private bath). Students share a floor with about 6-10 other British and international students. There is no meal plan; students generally prepare their own meals in the residence halls or eat at local restaurants. There is a difference in cost between standard and en-suite housing, please refer to the budget estimate for further details.

Queen Mary is a unique university in London because the housing is all on campus. Most students at a London university will have a 20-40 minute commute to class.

Excursions & Social Activities
Queen Mary has an active social life. Its student union is ranked one of the best in London. There are many clubs and societies to join. Sports clubs are not as competitive as in the US and so are good for anyone. Their web site outlines many other opportunities.
