Description

Students may enroll in either the summer or the fall component of this program, or in both.

Summer component (7 weeks, 8 credits):  Based in the mountain town of Jarabacoa, the summer component includes classroom study, educational excursions to sites relevant to the study of Dominican health and nutrition, and a  research project related to program themes under the guidance of the faculty director and program staff.

Fall component (typically 12–18 credits):  Based at Pontifícia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in the city of Santiago, the fall semester component consists of PUCMM courses for foreigners complemented by a community health practicum, a major research project, and access to regular PUCMM courses.

The two components are quite different and complement each other nicely; students are encouraged to consider enrolling in both.

Curriculum

Summer component:  All students take a 3-credit Spanish course at the appropriate level and a 5-credit interdisciplinary seminar on Latin American/Caribbean health and nutrition culminating in the research project. Instruction is in English by Dominican and US faculty.

Fall component:  Students enroll in advanced Spanish (required); Dominican and Caribbean studies for foreign students; a required Research Seminar and related field research project; any of several health-related courses, including one built around a field practicum; and the possibility of taking a regular PUCMM course alongside Dominican students. Instruction is in Spanish by Dominican faculty.

Open to freshmen and above with 2.5 GPA, and demonstrated interest in health and nutrition. One year college-level Spanish required for Summer Session, 3 years college-level Spanish required for fall semester (or 2 years plus successful participation in the summer program).
