Students

The University of Minnesota (all campuses) offers mandatory international health insurance for education abroad opportunities provided through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI). Most students on University of Minnesota sponsored and cosponsored programs through the Learning Abroad Center are covered by this policy. The cost of this insurance is most often included in the program fee or arrangements can be made by the student to purchase the insurance individually at the Learning Abroad Center/Study Abroad Office on their respective campus.

The Learning Abroad Center will provide students with a detailed policy description defining all items covered and not covered along with an insurance card prior to your departure. For a few programs (generally, those which include country specific national insurance), you will receive the additional insurance information onsite. See the CISI international insurance FAQ for more information.

Students not working with the Learning Abroad Center

All University of Minnesota students are required to receive CISI insurance for any overseas travel related to their education as per the University's policy Education Abroad Opportunities: Addressing Health. To fulfill the requirements if you are not participating in a program offered by a University of Minnesota office that includes CISI insurance you can Apply Now.

For those students traveling abroad and not required to purchase CISI insurance, please click here for some questions to consider when purchasing your own coverage.

Faculty/Staff

Faculty and staff leading students abroad must be covered by the same insurance coverage as students and thus are required to receive CISI regardless of other coverage. The Learning Abroad Center will provide CISI insurance to Global Seminar Faculty Leaders, review teams, CI site visit groups and LAC travelers. Details and your insurance card will be provided by the Learning Abroad Center prior to departure. For more information please visit the CISI information page.

For those faculty/staff traveling abroad and not working with the Learning Abroad Center can review requirements and purchase any required coverage here.

Please review the complete details regarding the current CISI insurance policy.

If you will spend extra time overseas before or after your program, we strongly encourage you to purchase adequate insurance to cover that time (CISI will allow students, staff and faculty to purchase up to 30 days of insurance beyond the dates of the University of Minnesota coverage). You can contact CISI directly.
