Study Abroad Major Advising Sheets (SAMAS) are an innovation of the University of Minnesota's study abroad curriculum integration initiative. Study Abroad Major Advising Sheets describe academic considerations for study abroad and highlight specific study abroad programs approved by faculty and academic advisers.

Curricular Focus of Study Abroad Advising

Since the late 1990's, University of Minnesota education abroad professionals have partnered with faculty and academic units to identify study abroad programs that would allow undergraduates to fulfill degree requirements while remaining "on-track" to timely graduation.

Advising services within the Learning Abroad Center have been transformed since the late 1990's to focus more on academic planning and partnerships with academic advising across the campus. Study abroad program selection is focused on discipline AND destination. Students are encouraged to set academic and personal goals for study abroad.

Many other advising resources are available to University of Minnesota academic advisers and faculty.

Use of the Study Abroad Major Advising Sheets

Increasingly more students are receiving the message from their academic units early in their college careers to study abroad. Study Abroad Major Advising Sheets are the most visible communication tool regarding study abroad within the academic disciplines and are given to students by academic units during new student orientations, major declaration meetings, or general advising sessions. The Learning Abroad Center provides Study Abroad Major Advising Sheets to students during First Step meetings, and learning abroad program selection advising sessions.

Developing a Study Abroad Major Advising Sheet

While over 80% of U of M undergraduate majors have a Study Abroad Major Advising Sheet, if you do not see your student's undergraduate majors listed, please contact Gayle Woodruff, director of curriculum integration, to begin the study abroad curriculum integration process in your unit.
