The site visit dates will be determined based on hosts' and participants' schedules. On the application form, you may apply for all the destinations that are of interest to you and rank each according to your preference.

Service Learning and Education Abroad

The purpose of this site visit will be to introduce University of Minnesota faculty and staff to the concept of service-learning within an international context of education abroad. Participants will be exposed to theoretical models of service-learning and be required to complete readings about service-learning in education abroad in order to fully understand the programs they will visit while abroad.

This site visit will examine several programs in the Dominican Republic with various degrees of emphasis on service-learning. The diversity of program formats will expose participants to contrasting models of study abroad.

Examples of programs potentially on the visit:

CIEE Dominican Republic—Santiago (Service-Learning Track) (website)

The service-learning program integrates theory and practical learning in a community-based and cross-cultural context. An integrated approach to academics and urban and rural community development provides students the analytical tools to engage in active service and reflect on the complexities and challenges facing Santiago's Cibao region. Instruction is in Spanish. Students attend in the fall or spring semesters.

Latin American Health, Nutrition & Environmental Issues in the Dominican Republic (website)

This program, sponsored collectively by the Big Ten universities and the University of Chicago through the CIC (Committee on Institutional Cooperation), combines special classes for foreign students with regular courses at Pontifícia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra. Participants take an advanced Spanish course, special area studies courses for foreign students, and an independent research course. Of particular interest is the ability to participate in a community practicum alongside Dominican medical (or other) students. Excursions include visits to community health centers, a reforestation project, hospitals and clinics. Instruction is in Spanish. Students attend in the fall semester.

CIEE Dominican Republic—Santiago (Liberal Arts Track) (website)

This more traditional, classroom-based program, focused on Dominican culture and society, combines CIEE courses with the option of taking regular courses at Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestre. Participants may also take part in an optional community service course with a practicum in the areas of health/medicine, education or neighborhood assistance; and an optional ESL teacher-training course with a hands-on teaching practicum. Instruction is in Spanish. Students can attend for a semester or academic year.

CIEE Dominican Republic—Santo Domingo (website)

This more traditional classroom-based program permits students to select up to two CIEE study center courses offered in partnership with the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO), including a development internship or independent study course.  They take the remainder of their courses at El Bonó or INTEC in subjects such as economics, psychology, and environmental science.  A Caribbean Studies track permits students to focus their studies on the Caribbean region. Instruction is in Spanish. Students attend for a semester.

 

Biological and Health Sciences in Scandinavia


The purpose of this visit is to expose University of Minnesota faculty and academic advisers in the biological sciences and health sciences to examples of undergraduate study abroad options in the major and pre-professional development area.

Danish Institute for Study Abroad (website)

Several program tracks within the Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) program are explored: Medical Practice and Policy, Biotechnology and Biomedicine, and Nursing in Scandinavia: Context & Clinical Practice. In addition 2 special summer courses are discussed: Health, Disease & Drugs: Modern Health Care and HIV/AIDS in Europe.

University Study in Norway: University of Oslo (website)

This program is a university study program, which allows students to directly enroll in a foreign university and take classes with host country students. Instruction is in English by Norwegian faculty. Students can take classes for fall semester, spring semester, academic year. They are required to be sophomores and above and take the equivalent of 15 US credits per semester, which is approximately 30 credits at the University of Oslo. Bachelor degree programs in Health Management and Health Economics, Biology, Molecular Biology and Biological Chemistry provide coursework for U.S. students studying abroad.

University Study in Norway: Norwegian University of Life Sciences (website)

This program is a university study program, which allows students to directly enroll in a foreign university and take classes with host country students. Instruction is in English by Norwegian faculty. Students may take classes during the summer (special program for international students), fall semester, spring semester, academic year. They must be sophomores and above and take the equivalent of 15 US credits per semester, which is approximately 30 credits at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. The summer program awards 5 to 6 US credits, which is equivalent to 10 to 12 UMB study points. Departments include: Chemistry, Biotechnology and Food Science, Centre for Integrative Genetics

Education Abroad in South Africa

The purpose of this visit is to provide University of Minnesota faculty and staff with a general understanding of different learning abroad program options in South Africa. South Africa provides a fascinating alternative for students looking to study in an English speaking culture.

CIEE South Africa Service Learning (website)

Students take an integrated approach to learning and community involvement by being active in service while reflecting upon the complexities and challenges facing Cape Town specifically and South Africa generally. The program is designed to meet the needs of local communities and help foster civic responsibility; this service-learning program offers you a rigorous academic program of language study, social research methodology, African studies, and independent research. Students articipate in cultural and educational activities such as visits to local theater, music, and dance productions, museums, and rural cooperatives.

University Study in South Africa (website)

Students experience South Africa's reform-minded multicultural society by being fully integrating into one of 3 universities (University of Cape Town, Cape Town, University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, or University of KwaZulu–Natal, Durban). They may choose from small and large campuses in a wide variety of geographical settings. Students enroll in any university class made available to program participants, a wide range that varies between universities. Classroom instruction is in English by South African faculty. Typical credits: 30 for academic year; 15 for fall or spring semester. This program is offered in partnership with Interstudy, a partner with extensive experience and history in successfully supporting US students engaging in study at South African universities.

SIT South Africa (website)

The mission of the School for International Training (SIT) is to prepare students to be interculturally effective leaders, professionals, and citizens.This summer program in South Africa looks at the social change experienced in the educational setting in the historical and contemporary contexts. Many challenges still remain in reform and educational delivery before education will be able to play a role in social transformation.

Students combine classroom study with an educational practicum. An onsite orientation and educational excursions are built into the program to help facilitate learning of the culture. Typical credits: 8 for summer session. Courses include Educational and Social Justice Seminar and Education Practicum.
