Office
of International Programs (OIP)
Graduate students seeking funding for dissertation or predissertation
research abroad can find assistance at OIP in 645 Heller Hall on
the West Bank of the Minneapolis campus. OIP keeps a funding database
and also administers several national and local fellowship competitions
as part of its services for graduate students and faculty going
abroad for research or study. In 2001 OIP and the Graduate School
initiated a special scholarship program to support study, research,
and internships abroad for masters and professional degree
programs. OIP is the central international office for the University
of Minnesota. Offices related to study and travel abroad as well
as international students and scholars are part of OIP. Staff members
work closely with international programs and centers in colleges
and departments on the Twin Cities, Crookston, Duluth, and Morris
campuses. For further information, please visit www.international.umn.edu.
International
Student & Scholar Services (ISSS)
ISSS, located in 190 Humphrey Center, is dedicated to serving the
Universitys international community. The primary mission of
ISSS is assisting international students and scholars in successfully
accomplishing the goals that brought them to the University. ISSS
also offers international involvement opportunities for US students
through programs such as the Small World Coffee Hour (a bi-weekly
open house during the academic year) and the International Friendship
Group (a mentoring program). In addition, ISSS maintains an Intercultural
Training Center that provides education and cross-cultural training
to a variety of campus and Twin Cities groups. For further information,
please visit www.isss.umn.edu.
Institute
for Global Studies (IGS)
The Institute for Global Studies, in the College of Liberal Arts,
has offices in 214 Social Sciences. The mission of IGS is to internationalize
the undergraduate and graduate curricula in significant ways and
to provide a platform for research and scholarship on issues of
global significance. The Institute houses an undergraduate interdisciplinary
Global Studies major and minor, which require students to integrate
theoretical perspectives on broad global processes with a detailed
understanding of a particular world region. IGS encourages language
study and study abroad, provides internship opportunities, organizes
lectures and conferences, and sponsors Global Studies House, an
undergraduate residence hall. For further information, please visit
